In the 17th century shipbuilding developed into a science. The expansion of trade, but also the rivalry between seafaring nations, made it necessary to build larger and more powerful ships. This was not possible with traditional manual methods. Large shipyards were built where, in addition to shipbuilders and master carpenters, shipbuilding engineers also worked. They carried out scientific studies and produced precise construction drawings. The second selection from the "Souvenirs de Marine" contains authentic material about the construction, design, rigging, armament and ranking of the warships that were built in the 17th century. The illustrations of details on many ships bear witness to the high level of artistic design of the fore and aft ships.
